1996 was the year that Manic Street Preachers made the move from being a cult band in Britain to a universally popular one. Their fourth album, "Everything Must Go" was admired by both fans and critics. The band came away from the 1997 Brits Awards with two Awards [Best Album and Best British Group] and were nominated in two other categories. They also won three NME Brat Awards and topped all the major magazine polls for album of the year. The record produced four top ten hits in the UK. The first of these, 'A Design For Life' went to no. 2 in the UK Charts and was awarded an Ivor Novello song-writing award [possibly the first of its kind to deal with the themes of class struggle and the erosion of the welfare state].

Following the hugely successful re-release of 'The Holy Bible' in 2004, the band decided to do the same with 'Everything Must Go'. Mindful that the 'The Holy Bible' re-issue received such fantastic reviews the band was adamant this release would be to the same standard as its predecessor and have sourced the archives for previously unreleased material and recorded a brand new 45 minute documentary where each band member along with producer, Mike Hedges talks about the recording and subsequent success of the album. The DVD also features very personal and previously unseen home video footage.

In the months that followed the disappearance of band member and life-long friend, Richey Edwards in February 1995, the remaining members of the band; lyricist Nicky Wire, vocalist James Dean Bradfield and drummer Sean Moore thought long and hard about continuing but after months of uncertainty and confusion Nicky Wire presented James Dean Bradfield with the lyrics to 'A Design For Life' and the decision to continue was made. Despite his feelings of loss and confusion Nicky Wire felt sure of one thing - that 'A Design For Life' needed to be heard. They went into rehearsals and began writing the songs for 'Everything Must Go' - some of which included lyrics that Richey had left behind.

In their new incarnation as a three piece the band retreated to France with producer Mike Hedges. The idyllic surroundings, not to mention time out away from the glare of publicity that Richey's disappearance attracted, afforded the band space to reflect and a new musicality flourished that hadn't surfaced before. What emerged from the sessions in France [and completed back home in Wales], was a powerful and emotional record. Lyrically, it touched on their own personal situation and the urge to escape with 'Australia'; but the band's love of art and culture still thrived in songs inspired by Sylvia Plath ['The Girl Who Wanted To Be God'], the moral dilemmas of a war photographer ['Kevin Carter'] and the life of the painter Willem de Kooning ['Interiors']. Lush, Spector-esque strings added a euphoria that suggested despite the fact that they were still reeling from the fall-out of past year's events, the Manic Street Preachers were slowly coming to terms with their loss and looking to the future. A year after its release Everything Must Go was still in the charts having sold 1.3 million copies. It was a brave and dignified recovery.
