MESSRS. MORTON & SHEPARD A Good Joke (An astonishing German
7" historical artifact recorded in 1900 or 1901 onto a hard rubber base,
manufactured in Hannover by Emile Berliner [the first inventor to
actually develop a usable disc record technology and founder of 'The
Gramophone Company'] with recessed & possibly engraved lettering,
recorded in London and spoken in English. This disc plays at about
55rpm and has survived one hundred & twenty years. We even play
tested thedisc in the office with great care and what we heard can only
be described as voices from the dead...! Hi-Fi it isn't, as it was
designed for a bamboo needle and pressed into hard rubber, but to
have survived so long and still be playable is nothing short of a miracle)
*This is far & away the oldest record we have ever stocked*
TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATION
More Info:
This was one of the first recordings ever pressed onto a flat disc. The technology at the time was wax cylinder.
The success of this format [eventually] led to everything we know today as an LP or an EP or a single.
By their very nature, they were cut live onto a wax coated zinc plate, plunged in an acid bath to etch the grooves and a zinc negative was then electroplated onto this to form the stamper & the result pressed onto the hard rubber to produce this disc.
The significance of these early pioneering recordings cannot be over estimated. 'The Gramophone Company' led to EMI, Parlophone, Columbia [UK], His Master's Voice, Harvest .... the list goes on.
How many records do you own that have 'The Gramophone Company' on them somewhere ? Yes, lots.
If it hadn't been for these early experiments with flat discs, we might still be fighting with coated cylinders !
