John Coltrane The Cats - 1st UK Vinyl LP

TOMMY FLANAGAN WITH JOHN COLTRANE The Cats (Super Rare 1959 UK first press 5-track mono LP on Esquire with 'RVG' stamped in the run-outs, a highly acclaimed Hard Bop date starring pianist Tommy Flanagan & an energised John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, hot off the presses from the Miles Davis Quintet & hungry for new modes of expression. Also stars trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, guitarist Kenny Burrell & Doug Watkins on bass & Louis Hayes on drums, all on rip roaring form. This classic modern jazz date was issued after Coltrane's Prestige contract ended, found here with a superb & unique front laminated flipback sleeve which proudly puts Tommy pride of place & centre stage in his finest suit & hat, a much better design than its US counterpart we think! This is a lovely one owner example. The delicate sleeve grades Excellent with the front image looking strong & righteous & the back print is a nice off white with no writing or tears. The edges are sharp & crisp & there is just a little natural ageing to the laminate. The heavyweight vinyl is clean & grades Excellent with no scratches or raised marks - On close inspection, there are just a few very minor spindle marks around the centre hole & the very faintest paper hairline to show handling or play. Certainly a crown jewel in any modern jazz collection!)
